/brushes dust off blog

Okay, straight up... Facebook has eaten my blogging. -_-; Apologies to anyone that only finds me here. I hope that may change again eventually, but as much as the super-short posts there annoy me sometimes, it seems to be what I have time for these days. /sigh Do still feel free to poke me here if this is the only way you know to reach me (or add me on FB). I'll still respond to comments. ^_~

Oh. Em. Gee. Feb. 19th, 2009 @ 08:22 pm
I have lots to update when I eventually get time. But today, I had to at least share this. Sometime between after I left work at 9 pm last night and before I got back in at 8:30 am this morning, a water pipe that ran down the center of the ceiling in our back work-room burst. I'm still having a hard time wrapping my mind around the amount of mess this created. So much stuff ruined. Because, librarians tend to have lots of papers and books and crafts and goodness knows what-all else on their desks, yanno? Not to mention the computers. The poor, poor computers. ;_; Since the water pretty much rained down from above (along with various chunks of disintegrated ceiling tiles) little was safe. Only the six cubicles along the wall were okay, the others are all arranged in the center. Under where the water ran. All day today was pretty much spent trying to do damage control. They wet-vacuumed the carpet as much as possible and treated it with something that is supposed to prevent mold and ran fans and dehumidifiers all day (probably will still be going tonight and/or tomorrow) trying to dry the carpet out. Sections of ceiling and wall are going to need to be scraped and repainted as well since the water bubbled and swelled under the paint in places warping it and even swelling it out like water balloons. It took them a while to get the lights working again, but eventually we at least could see better what we were trying to sort through. (I think the lights above my cubicle may still have water in them though.) Of course, we still opened to the public today. O_O Thankfully though, we had a bunch of subs come in (bless them with no notice like this) to help cover the desks out front and help patrons so that the regular staff could try to get things sorted in the back. Silver lining? I guess my desk is the most cleared off clean it has been since we moved the branch into this building 7 years ago. I have such a headache right now. lol

Admittedly? It could have been much worse. I'm glad it wasn't.

One other thing that has made me happy lately is (finally!) some new episodes of Battlestar Galactica. Even if they are likely to rip my heart out and stomp on it. And then it will all be over. I am looking forward to going back and watching episodes over again too. I had fun watching previous seasons over with Romandave while he was catching up, because there are so many things that come across in different ways when you know things that get revealed later. I think the biggest thing I want explained though is Starbuck, but that's mostly because she's one of my fangirl obsessions. I have decided that I don't care if she is the angel of death or the harbinger of the apocalypse, she is still a rock star. It occurred to me that Starbuck goes well with Pink, and vid makers on YouTube didn't disappoint me, here are two of my favs:

Spoilers! Thoughts on the latest episode. )
» Machinima stuff
Romandave and I had dinner with MR on Friday night to hear some of his new ideas for future projects for Running Gun, before we all headed over to Shoggoth1's so Romandave could do some recording. Not going to say anything about the new stuff yet, since I don't know what I'm allowed to say, but there is some potential coolness. heh I do feel somewhat sorry for some of the other people at the diner who may have overheard parts of the conversation since they probably ended up very confused. =P What else is new, right? I'm still a little sad that the next episode (14) of Spriggs will be the last one. I'm going to miss the characters anyway. Episode 13 "All Hail the Murphy" is posted up at YouTube now, but I don't know when 14 will be out. Hopefully they'll leave at least one of the chicken ad-libs in. I'm usually pretty good about keeping silent while the actual recording is happening and then laughing after. I was having a bit of a hard time this last one though because MR kept *looking* at me, so I'd put my hand over my mouth, and then he'd point at me evil-monkey-style, and I'd start to lose it, then *he'd* start to lose it, and I'd just be gone. Probably a good thing Romandave had his back to us. I think we managed to hold out until Romandave was actually done ad-libbing, but it was close. This was from a while ago, but this was one of his longer making-stuff-up-on-the-fly moments set to some out-takes from the filming to make a short for in-between episodes:

Also, a bit sad to see that Nyhm just announced that due to some RL issues he wouldn't be able to play WoW anymore and he's not sure if he's going to continue producing machinima. This is a bummer to me since I've been amused by his WoW videos and songs for a while now. At least he got one more out recently, and it was one for Priests (Holy) which I've been waiting for him to do. lol Priests need love too.

Still, as long as Spiffworld keeps making WoW machinima vids to Jonathan Coulton songs, I'll be happy. Latest there is for "Shop Vac":

This week slammed me so much, I almost forgot Snape's b-day yesterday! I had to get the previous post posted first though. >_<

In honor, figured I'd rec what is probably my fav HP meta lately (thanks to my co-worker RM for sending me this one!) http://m-stiefvater.livejournal.com/89143.html Maggie Stiefvater on characterization. I love this. It made me lol and makes sense. I think this has a lot to do with the longevity of fic in the HP world even though the books be done.

He'd be pushing 50 this year if he'd lived (and you know he did!) )
» A Partial Re-cap...
What an end to the year! The last few weeks have been so full!

The party at K-kat and G's was a bit muddy and cold, but Romandave and I dressed warm and it was pretty nice out by the fire. =) It was good to see them again, since I missed them at Halloween (stupid head-cold) and the only part of the evening that wasn't enjoyable was my own fault. lol Unfortunately, I didn't get to talk to Dragonfancy and Druidman much there, but at least they had dropped by earlier in the month when a bunch of Romandave's coworkers came over after work.

Christmas day was the one day that both Romandave and I had off together. It was nice. =) We slept in and took our time having some coffee in the morning. Then swung by my aunt and uncle's to say hi to them and the cousins. I love seeing them, and I don't get to nearly often enough, but I especially wanted to give my cousin M a hug before she headed off to Italy for the next month or so for one of her art classes. Sounds like she's having a great time there so far from her emails. I can't wait to see pictures! ^_^ Then out to the barn to give Mr. Bob christmas hugs and treats and a brushing. Also grabbed one of his sheets to drop off at the cleaners since it's been so muddy here lately. (Stupid rain, I want snow!!!) Then we spent the rest of the evening relaxing and playing some WoW. Managed to hit lev 75, but we're still being quite slow getting to 80. meh... No rush.

Friday game was pretty good, though I think we're down to just 3 players playing 5 characters for the time being. We lost our cleric to work and RL a while ago, though he occasionally drops in to say hi, and J has always been a little hit or miss depending on if he's out of state or country for work. But now J has had back surgery, so he's going to be out for a good bit. I did get an email from him though and it sounds like it went okay. We may try to drive out to visit him at some point since he's not going anywhere for a while. For now though, we've secretly replaced his warlord with a wizard. heh =)

On the 27th, we hung out at Sterling and Echo's for a pay-per-view UFC event with some other peeps. I'm kinda digging the mixed martial arts stuff now. I find it fun to watch due to the different combinations of fighting styles. You just never know what you'll end up with, which keeps it interesting. http://www.ufc.com/index.cfm?fa=eventDetail.FightCard&eid=1782 It isn't something that I'm actually going to have time to follow or anything, but if it's on, I'll watch it.

Since I only barely got to see my parents over at my aunt and uncle's (they got there a little before we had to head out since dad had church that morning) we had them over for dinner on Sunday for spaghetti and MST3K. Unfortunately, the disc for "The Wild World of Batwoman" had issues about half-way through. I think that's only the second DVD from Netflix I've had a problem with. Bummer though. =P

New Year's was at Qtbuglet and Simontrueheart's, and was so made of win!!! Probably more flocked on that and other stuff later, but for now, it's taken me more than a week just to type *this* in bits and pieces. Work is not likely to give me much in the way of free time at all this month, so I don't know how much I'll manage to get posted. -_-; /sigh I'll just say that though this month so far has been a bit rough, at least 2009 *started out* well. =) Clinging to that right now, really.
» I drew a birdie!
I keep looking at this and picking at it, but if I fiddle with it much more I will go crazy, so I'm calling it done. =P Very first attempt at drawing something using Photoshop 7, and also first attempt using my belated b-day present: a wacom bamboo. Most of the success I give to the pen, which is sooooooo much easier to use than the mouse. Photoshop will take me a while to learn. I think to say it isn't intuitive to figure out is an understatement. Still, this was mainly trying to figure out how layers work, and a few simple things like different brushes and I finally gave up and used blur a fair bit on the feathers to spare my sanity. I blame this very pretty book (I brought it home for Romandave since he wanted pictures of hawks for painting a mini lol) for making me think I wanted to doodle something with feathers: http://www.amazon.com/Birds-Prey-Floyd-Scholz/dp/0811702421/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1230425181&sr=1-1 *head-desk* I'm at least pretty happy with the eye. ^_^

Edit: little fiddle with the background and switched a layer.
» Happy Holidays!
I hope everyone has a safe and peaceful holiday. Aside from one little family thing, Romandave and I are going to just enjoy both having a day together that we don't have to go into work. A rare thing lately, with him working two jobs, and me not taking days off (Hopefully, I'll be able to start using leave again by Feb. when we have new subs that can take the hours. I seriously can't wait.) It's not that either of us don't get *any* days off, but we rarely do at the same time. -_-; I still feel guilty for avoiding people, but I needs a break. =) Now if only it would snow!

I can just pretend there is snow by running around Northrend. Cut for lots of screen-shots. )

This holiday message from Liam Show (Kelly) made me lol:

I do have a winter egg, and am now awaiting christmas dragons. O_O I wish they'd drop soon!

I expected it to be cold tonight, but I had hoped for *dry*. It rained all day yesterday here so the ground is still pretty wet though, and there are forecasts for freezing rain or "wintry mix" around or after midnight tonight. Snow would be awesome IMO, but it's probably going to be sleet at best. And even if the temperature *does* drop enough, that will mean more in the way of ice. /sigh I wish it would just get cold and stay cold instead of all this back and forth stuff. It makes for more sleet/freezing rain/ice instead of what I want, which is just plain snow. =P I don't know how much time I'll be able to spend outside, or how the fire will do (if they even try to have one.) We'll just have to hope for the best, and possibly move things inside.

Anyway, for the longest, darkest night of the year, here's an inspirational speech brought to you by 40 different movies (Gakked from Orangerful!):

Also, dragons!: )

» Happy Halloween!
A quiet Samhain this year. I was going to go over to K-kat and G's house, but I'm still not feeling well and figure I probably shouldn't stay up late sitting around outside. =( I keep coughing, which is keeping me from sleeping well. At least I have the weekend off now! I did dress up at work today, though I was a slightly un-bouncy Tigger. (If I get any pics, I'll post them.) I got a lot of smiles out of people anyway which made up for being way too warm in that get-up. lol We *did* get some Trick-or-Treaters at the new house too! Not a lot, but I'm hoping next year I can get some decorations out and attract some more (I was going to do that this week, but just wasn't feeling up to it. meh) I am consoling myself with little pixel-dragons. I am truly addicted to these. Also, there was a special Halloween zombie egg released today and I managed to snag one! Took forever and I almost gave up, but: score!

Halloween egg: Adopt one today!

Other current eggs: Adopt one today! *** Adopt one today! *** Adopt one today!

Hatchlings: Adopt one today! *** Adopt one today! *** Adopt one today!

They are Trick or Treating for clicks! ^_^
» I know you need to breathe through...
Home sick today. meh I've been sick since Friday night really (after our General Staff Meeting), and I *was* starting to feel better, but yesterday at work kicked my butt. (Three days worth of delivery to deal with did not help me. /sigh) I just need some more Nyquil and rest now. So many other things I feel like I should be doing though. At least my internet is behaving for the moment. It was pretty Comcastic last night; up and down. Even the tv kept flickering and sputtering a bit. 'Twas a shame, I could have used the distraction since I couldn't lie down without coughing; so I spent the night dozing in the recliner.

Distracting myself with music is easy. I've had "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz stuck in my head (Thanks Liha! LOL) since she posted the vid:

But then Littleblackbow's entry in the Games got "Adventures In Solitude" by New Pornographers stuck there. Stuck so bad, I picked up the American Teen album for my i-pod so I could get it (couldn't get the song individually >_<) Here it is with a Starbuck vid, for those not following the Games, and because I really miss BSG. /sigh

Dear World of Warcraft,
In your absence, I find other forms of amusement.

The first big WoW patch in preparation for Wrath of the Lich King hit on Tuesday. Which means: server down-time, patch loading, and then all the loading of new 3.0 compatible versions of UI add-ons or looking for replacements for ones that are hosed. Also, they remade the talent trees, so everyone is figuring out their specs all over. I'm not sure I'm digging the new achievement thing right now. It seemed neat at first, but I'm already tired of seeing the messages every time someone gets one for the littlest things. I'm wondering when they'll add one for remembering to breathe? Or would that discriminate against the un-dead? j/k =P At least all the Halloween stuff is up. I love it so! Of course, I should probably enjoy it while I can since I don't know if our computers are going to be able to handle Wrath or not. I've been having a hard time feeling excited about the expansion anyway, but it may be moot for a while. meh

Meanwhile, I've become engrossed with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/theelderscrollsivoblivion/index.html on the 360 this week to distract myself. It's lovely except my only complaints so far is that it is only single-player, and you go through an incredibly detailed character design process only to almost never see your character in game. (You can either play in first person and not see the character at all, or play from just behind and above the character and almost never see more than the back of them. After designing the face in detail. WTF? o_O) Yes, Romandave and I finally got a 360. Between the price drop and saving both of our birthday windfalls, we could do it. We felt pretty sheepish going up to the cashier with so many giftcards that we'd been hording. lol I did ask first if they could do multiples in a transaction, if it was okay, and she smiled and said it would be fine (but I still felt silly.) At least we did not pull out a jar of change for the rest that we did in cash. I think homicide would have been justifiable on the part of the cashier if we had done that also. lol We did pick up a second game as well (we each picked one) and of course I had to get Soul Calibur IV. I haven't played it (non-stop lol) the way I did with Soul Calibur II, but it will get its turn. Yoda is too cute, but I covet Vader. ^_^

I am also really addicted to Dragon Cave and some of the communities for it. http://dragcave.net/

I have two new babies, the white hatched already, and hopefully the green egg will very soon. Clickies!
